Snowball: Which one? You mean the one with three of us?

Me: Not exactly. It's me, you guys are just background.

Alienation

“Hey, you’ll leave for more than two weeks. I’m going to miss you! You indeed look like Edward Norton, so I’ll watch more Edward Norton film, for missing you! I said, to Brendan, two weeks ago.

Today.

“Hey, Wula, I’ll borrow this magazine from you, because there’s review about Tarkovsky, plus, Edward Norton is on the cover! Then I pointed Edward Norton’s photo to Wula.

“Oh, that guy, he took a glance at the cover, “He came here a few days ago, for interview.

“What?! Why you didn’t tell me?! You don’t know I like him?! Oh, yes, you don’t know. But you should know, don’t you think he looks like Brendan?!

“er…does he?

“You magazine is mine now, for your misjudgment.

“OK...when Brendan comes back?

“Who cares?! I still can’t believe I missed E-d-w-a-r-d N-o-r-t-o-n!

Foreign Imperialist Gravely Misunderstands Chinese Culture

Me: I left a comment on yuha’s blog yesterday, hope he will reply:P

Him: I'm sure he will. What was it? "HURRY UP?!?!"

Me: what are you talking about?

Him: second part of Brothers.

Me: I said I prefer his novel to the essays, too many quotations in his essays.

Him: hmmm, were you bowing as you wrote it?

Me: This is the Chinese way!

Him: I know.

Me: Oh, I remember you can't get used to "nin"

Him: nin I can get used to.

Me: I stand in the corner, so nobody can attack me from behind!

Him: yes, and lay on the floor so they can't launch a sneak attack from under the carpet.

Me: oh, then he would think: well, in this case, I have nothing to say

Closed Mondays

â…°

Even now, I’m sort of ashamed that I’m dumb with some “common sense, especially as a painter, lazy painter though. Yesterday I took my friends to 798 Art District then found most of the galleries were closed. At the beginning, I thought it’s just bad luck until I pushed the door open and stepped into a messy room.

Me—Hi, any exhibitions here?

Them—Not today

Me—What are you guys doing?

Them—Decorating, this will be a new Italian gallery as well as our neighbor.

Me—I heard of it, so when…(I should stop chatting since my friends were waiting for me outside)

Meï¼?Why most of the galleries are closed today, just because of Monday?

Them—Yes, ALL THE GALLERIES IN THE WORLD ARE CLOSED ON MONDAYS.

Me—Why 798 can’t be different…

Them—(The friendly couple just gave me smile and silence…)

I’m really really sorry to make a stupid decision to take my friends to 798 on MONDAY:(

â…±

Still, in 798, café, in the restroom doorway, a foreign man was approaching me…

Me—Du Kefu! ( Christopher Doyle’s Chinese name, I called him as if he was my soldier:P)

He—Who are you!

Me—(absolutely not one of your girlfriendSSS, relax…) Haha, you don’t know me, you’re tooooooo famous!(ya,that is my tone,太~~有å??了)

Then he said something in Chinese, I couldn’t understand it, I’ve thought his spoken Chinese was pretty good, at the moment, he seemed drunk to me,or maybe I just thought that because of his red nose.

â…²

798, outside café

The face in the photo used to be very famous in the last few years in Beijing, finally found it again. When I was trying to take that photo, I noticed a guy leaning on the wall, sending a text message.

Me—Hi, would you mind me taking a photo of you and the face on the wall?

He—Oh, sorry, you want to take the photo of wall?(he’s walking towards me, that’s what I want)

Me—It’s ok, I’m just afraid you don’t like to be in the photo without your permission.

He—Not a big deal, you like the face on the wall?

Me—Yes, but what a pity that a car hides it… or it would be perfect!

He—You need me to move the car?

Me—That’s great! Is it your car? Would you mind moving your car a little far away, just a little.(he doesn’t know 20mins ago I was trying to kick his car but just lifting my leg up)

He—No problem!

Me—Sooooooo nice of you!

Tuanjie Problem in Tuanjie Lake

Tuánjié, it can be used as noun means comity, rally, solidarity; or verb, means hold together, unite, solidify. To the best of my knowledge, Tuanjie Lake area hasn’t changed a lot compared to other places in Beijing, at least I still can find some relative traditional breakfast place around there. Once I talked with my friend who lives there, she told me a new change was coming.

She— Hey, do you notice many Xinjiangese around Tuanjie Lake area recently?

Me— Nope, but I took a nice photo of Xinjiang kid there, did you see that?

She— No. At least you’re luckier than me. What I see is the robberies, which are committed by Xinjiangese most, and a Xinjiang guy even followed me once, awful experience.

Me— Robbery?! Really?!

She— Sure, and the policemen don’t dare to intervene the robbery, otherwise they will be accused of destroying national solidarity(ç ´å??æ°‘æ—?

Me— (78 seconds laugh)…

Now, I’m wondering how many of you can get this post means, perhaps it doesn’t make sense to you…I’m wondering if it is a mistake that I prefer translating some words with Chinese characteristics into my crappy English, if it can be called as a mistake. Or, it’s an innovation in language? Ok, I’m bragging, I’m just get used to messing and cleaning to kill the time:P

Speaking of English, there’s another conversation between my mom and me. One of my habits is to chat with my mom after dinner. Today she asked why I slept later than usual.

Me— I was writing many looooooong English compositions, you know my English is poor so I have to spend more time writing them.

Ma— I’ve thought your English was good, I remembered you talked a lot with your friends in English on the phone

Me— Yeah, full of “Sorry? “I can’t get it “Can you speak as slowly as possible “When we can have a conversation in Chinese?!

No One Is Lovely!

I was smoking, sitting on the steps outside a bookshop (“the uneducated is cheated by the educated, the educated is cheated by printed matter), chatting with my friend. A young guy came running over to us and breathlessly asked:

“Could you lend me 2Y for a bus fare?

“No., I said after a moment of hesitation

“I’ve heard people here can take the bus for free…?

“If you’re ‘lucky’. Said my friend.

Then he turned back and went on running. Looking at his receding figure, my friend said:

“He’s kind of like British beggar. (Advance with times?)

“Yeah…Mencius believed the basic goodness of human nature could be explained as ‘heart of compassion’, which was the instinct reaction when man encountered the pathetic things or people. But many beggars made up their stories to cheat people, in a sense, it’s not because I’m cold-hearted, it’s them to kill my compassion

“Look, this is your nature, you often shift the blame onto others instead of yourself!

Iintrinsic Power of Pictures

Snowball is preparing the final paper for submittal. The discussion might be a good way to make the paper better because then you can check if something is really what you think and avoid some mistakes are easy to make. That's why she asked me what I think about "the intrinsic power of pictures" and " how artists use their work to pose questions". This post is my reply to snowball and I'm looking forward to her view. I'm not sure if there’re a number of contradictions in it, maybe it's rubbish only, even if it is, at least it would help snowball to keep away from bullshit. I would like to be such a good friend:)

Many thanks to intellectual Jim for translating the first part of this post:), 掌声鼓励一下:P

Wen: Could you write something about the intrinsic power of pictures and how artists use their work to pose questions? I’ll also write about this and we can have a discussion.

Li: My feeling is that there is no need to discuss whether or not pictures have an intrinsic power – all existing things must have a ‘power’ (a single line is enough to evoke the ‘single plume of smoke rising straight above the desert’ [from the classical poem written by Wang Wei]). Power may be strong or weak in terms of its dynamism; warped or straight in terms of its direction; and manifest or hidden in terms of its form. In one sense there is nothing intrinsically to be decried about power, since both great genius and basest idiocy are scarce commodities (and hence our discussion bears no relation to these two); by this I mean the majority of people have neither great natural gifts of power but nor are they by nature entirely powerless. So shouldn’t a discussion of power ultimately concern itself with the production of power (its origins), the transmission of power (its processes), and the manifestations of power (its end point)? This looks at why and how the inner power of a picture is in fact manifested and how it is resolved in the end point of manifestation in a picture or painting.

  1. The production of power (its origins):

For me this is one of the most interesting things about the power of pictures, and also the closest to reality (the action of depiction will likely distort this reality unless the artist is very lucky or very skilful); it is also the most important determinant of a picture’s power. Here one’s in-born tastes and instinctive likes and dislikes are the best choices for the location of the originating point, since no power can compare with the power of nature. A good start is half the battle; indeed at times success is entirely due to it. For example, with Nobuyoshi Araki who you are so fond of my feeling is that his work relies heavily on instinct and contains very little ‘creativity’. Perhaps he instinctively feels the tensions of the bound female form and then takes this instinctive thought and gives it manifestation in a more instinctive way. The primal energy is sustained right throughout the process allowing the achievement of his unique work. He is lucky because he is very clear about what he likes and dislikes whereas most people tend to just wander about rather aimlessly between these two extremes. The result of these wanderings may be a discovery of what was sought or it may be to get completely lost; aspiring artists who can’t rely on strong instincts must clarify as their picture progresses. This latter case accounts for the situation of the great majority, I feel, so perhaps our efforts would be better spent considering instead the transmission of power, although here there also exists an interdependency – before power finally reaches its end point the movement towards that endpoint determines all the related factors in the transmission process, including importantly the form in which that power is expressed. Hence when choosing how one is going to first invoke power one’s choice is actually also accompanied by considerations of where it will end up, which is the end point of power. Most likely it’s all like this – coming and going, mutually interconnected.

之外,是å?¦è¿˜æœ‰ä»€ä¹ˆæ¯”ç”»é?¢è¯è¨€æ›´é‡?è¦? 是å?¦ä¹Ÿæ˜¯å¦™â€œæ³•â€??

Thanks for reading the above, please enjoy the song from Cuijian's new album "show you color"红先生Mr. Red:), I like it since I first heard it months ago and still enjoy Liuyuan's performance.

Bargain Over the Price

My friends and I are stupid at bargaining with the shopkeepers. We only use the following tricks...

--Hey, my friend looks smart but actually she is not. Once she likes you then your shop will be her first even the only choice, make her like you! so don't you think this sweater should be cheaper?!

Or…

We--I buy your stuff, you should buy me ice cream in return! Drop the price!

They—I want to have ice cream too.

We—Do you think it feels great to have ice cream in such a cold day?!

...

See, what we can get is ice cream only, our business brain freeze by eating too many ice creams.

From The Gates to Complementary Color

John is my artist net buddy. Tonight we met on the net and talked about many things about art, from The Gates to ZhangYimou, from Jackie Chan to complementary color...(Forgive me my poor English, I really didn't have time to check the dictionary...)

John: What did u think of the Christo project in New york City?

Li: let me remember my first sight at the photos you gave me

John: ok, photos were not great

Li: and not many

John: yeah most came out bad, hard to get on film

Li: i didnt feel much excited about the orange flags(maybe not flags),i like orange though, and i remembered you mentioned it would be better in the sunshine day with breeze, that sounds more excited.

John: yes i agree..unfortunately the whole project did not do a lot for me. i think i had too high expectation

Li: never have too hight expectation,i told myself this a lot

John: was fun just to walk around in it but the scale ,.Height, seems too short for the size of the setting

Li: if you think too short, that must be a big problem. sometimes, the quantity can make different quality, damn it,i really don't know how to express with my such poor English. such as the arrows in the "hero"

John: yes the quantity was great (7500 gates) but I was not overwelmed by them like i wanted to be

Li: are you overwelmed by arrows in the "hero"?

John: i liked the arrows scene

Li: that's why zhangyimou is professional, but i think its a little extreme

John: especially the ones coming in the building when everyone was calmly sitting

Li: this is his old trick. thats why most chinese dont like hero

John: yes i have asked several chinese and so far not many really like it...more popular in USA

Li: especially the theme, and i dont think there're many excited scenes in that film

John: i do get tired of the flying through the air scenes with a big sword out in front though

Li: i watched a few scenes in Peacock, very beautiful. i think that director is great! not like zhang's film, just PRETTY

John: do u like Yimuo early films?

Li: yes,i do. but dont like the last cooperation with GongLi,i dont know its english name John: do u like Not One Less?

Li: oh,no. i dont, but to be honest, its still better than most films directed by others John: yes little corny but i liked it

Li: i like his film about a woman will sue the leader in her countryside, its master piece John: what is the name?

Li: The Story of Qiu Ju

John: yes i know that one....i liked very very much

John: we have very few chinese films here ...but i think any are a good change from many of the silly "action" american films

Li: when i was tired, action movie is my favorite, such as HARD ROCK

John: we all like old JACKIE CHAN films here haha

Li: HAHA,but i dont like him

John: i like a lot but his new ones r terrible

Li: i like Jet lee more, the way he plays kungfu is very beautiful

John: i knew u would say that hehe

Li: IT'S TRUE

John: Jackie is terrible actor but great stunt man

Li: and he is handsome, chinese style handsome

John: u mean Jet Li?

Li: of course

John: Jackie has big nose, haha ,maybe that is why i like him

Li: yes,i used to think Jackie is very handsome when i was a kid

John: really???

Li: yes,i was abmormal that age...

John: it's fun to be "ABmormal"

Li: for example, we all know what complementary color in the painting

John: yes...

Li: i think complementary color like a couple. when i was a kid,i think blue and red is a couple, green and yellow is a couple

John: but those not complementary colors

Li: yes, thats why i said i was "different"

John: ah ic....i'm a little slow too

Li: complementary color should be recognised by eyes, not by teaching

John: i have hard time with colors....usually only use very little ...and never sure about combinations

Li: haha,no wonder you're a man,woman has that gift

Li: but woman seldom do a big job

John: hmmm is that the reason

Li: differently sort of

John: i am repainting the walls in my kitchen....just going to use white...easy

Li: you can use the gray,we often call them high-class gray, its the mark of my university John: don't like gray in kitchens...sorry

P.S. The figure drawing is made by John, I like that, as I told him, a little like my favorite artist---Euan Uglow’s works.

Regain Thoughts

I allowed myself to get up late today because I figured I got a cold already (or got a sign of cold---sore throat). It’s 11:30 o’clock, I still lay on my bed watching Friends although I’ve got calls from 3 editors since I woke up. The more others urge me, the more slowly I do—I’m not sure if it is my horrible nature.

My sister once suggested that I’d better to take some Chinese medicine to regain(调) my health in my swelling days or when I stayed up all night. So at that moment, when I didn’t want to work, I was wondering if I should have a medical examination in Chinese medicine hospital .It’s said the doctor I’m gonna see is good and his grandfather’s grandfather was a imperial physician (I would rather believe he is a contemporary imperial physician). And then, my mum came into my room (I was still in bed…),

Mum—Lunchtime!

Me—Hey, mum, I wanna go to the Chinese medicine hospital.

Mum— For what?

Me—Because I am old enough, some friends saw the doctor already, it’s a sign! It’s my turn to take our traditional magical Chinese medicine to regain my health.

Mum—whatever, I’m just asking you if you want to have lunch.

Me—No! I think I should have more sleep then have strength to go to the hospital.

Mum—I believe you should regain your thoughts first.(我看你还是先调调你的想)

Boring Monday

(1) Conversation between my friend and I, got her message in the morning: She—How're you doing?

Me—Fucking bored.(I was really in the bad mood at that moment, Sleeping is better than wasting time at least. )

She—It's impossible to have a meaningful day everyday, close your eyes and you would better stand it to get used to it.

Me—What I'm worried is "get used to".

She—EVERYONE does that.

(2) Conversation between my colleague, I asked him first:

Me—Why we have to inform the embassy when the agent invite the galleries to attend our exhibition?

He—Are you kidding, you really don't know?!

Me—No, I don't.

who was more awkward now, he must thought where I am from, maybe it's common sense for most people, I'm sorry that was not me.

(3) The similar conversation with a leader who worked on cultural exchange for many years.

Me—Why I can't get the British accent, because I watched too many Hollywood films?! poisoned by the people of United States.

He—You're honest, I can't get their accent either. (then he began to talk about something happened in a country in South Africa )

Me—What is that? Never heard of that country

He—You're honest, I really like your attitude, some people always like to pretend that they know everything.

I wanted to tell him that I really want to pretend to know something sometimes if I know how to , but I didn't think he would get what I mean.

(4) leader, colleague and me

Me—Hi, leader, you had your hair cut off, let me see if its cool.
